A Journey to the Nile

The Pyramid
of Power

Step back in time to ancient Egypt, where society was shaped like one of its great pyramids — a single god-king on top, and millions of hard-working hands holding up the base.

Egyptian society had clear levels. The higher up you were, the more power you held — but the fewer of you there were. Click any tier of the pyramid to jump to that class.

The Pharaoh

A living god who ruled all of Egypt

Who they were
Egyptians did not see the pharaoh as just a king. They believed he was a living god — the god Horus in human form — and the high priest of the whole land.
Their role
He made the laws, led the army, owned the land, and performed the most important religious ceremonies for the gods.
Why they mattered
People believed that as long as the pharaoh kept order (called Ma'at), the Nile would flood and crops would grow. Holding both political and religious power, he kept the whole society united.

Nobles, Priests & Scribes

The educated few who ran the kingdom

Who they were
A small group of powerful, well-trained people who served directly under the pharaoh and helped manage Egypt.
Their role
Nobles governed the regions and collected taxes. Priests cared for the temples and led the rituals. Scribes were trained to read and write hieroglyphics, so they kept every record, tax, and law.
Why they mattered
They kept Egypt organized and running smoothly. They were the link that carried the pharaoh's wishes down to the ordinary people — without them, nothing stayed in order.

Farmers, Laborers & Enslaved People

The largest group, the foundation of society

Who they were
By far the biggest group — the great majority of all Egyptians lived and worked here.
Their role
Farmers grew the wheat and barley that fed the country, using the Nile's yearly floods to water their fields. Laborers built the temples and pyramids. (Pyramid workers were paid workers who lived in nearby cities — not slaves.)
Why they mattered
They were the foundation everything rested on. They grew the food, paid taxes in crops, and provided the muscle for Egypt's huge projects. The whole pyramid literally stood on their shoulders.

How They Worked Together

One society, every layer linked

No class stood alone. Wealth, food, and orders flowed between them like the Nile through Egypt.
